Is It Done?
Never know when your steak is done? Try out this helpful hack!
Try the “Face Test”: First, completely relax your face. Stay expressionless, no smiling or frowning!
- If you like your steak rare, compare its firmness to the fleshy part of your cheek. If your steak it rare, it will feel very similar! Remember, a rare steak has a cool, bright red center.
- For a medium-rare steak, compare its firmness to the firmness of your chin, just below your bottom lip. Medium-rare steaks have a warm red center.
- Compare the firmness of the tip of your nose to the firmness of your steak. If they are similar, then your steak is medium-done. Medium steaks have a warm pink center with brown surrounding it.
- Finally, a well-done steak should feel like the firmness of your forehead. Well-done steaks have no pink left inside.
While this hack is useful, to be sure your red meat meets your doneness standards, you should buy a meat thermometer! Rare steaks should be 120 °F, medium-rare steaks should be 130 °F, medium steaks should be 135-145 °F, and well-done steaks should be 155-160 °F.
